The NMI Democratic Party is now officially affiliated with the U.S. national Democratic Party.
Debbie Wasserman Schulz, chair of the Democratic National Committee and a congresswoman from Florida, made the announcement during a DNC meeting this weekend, within days after President Barack Obama accepted the party nomination for re-election this November.
Schulz also said in her Twitter post, “After #DNC2012, we've unanimously approved recognizing the Northern Mariana Islands as part of the DNC.”
Delegate Gregorio Kilili Sablan's (Ind-MP) campaign welcomed the NMI Democratic Party's inclusion in DNC. Sablan has been running as an independent, but has aligned himself with the Democrats in U.S. Congress.
Sablan's campaign also said NMI Democratic Party chair and former judge Ed Manibusan has been instrumental in making the local party officially affiliated with the U.S. national Democratic Party.
The NMI Democratic Party fielded only one candidate for the Nov. 6 midterm elections-Jesse David Torres, vying for a House seat representing precinct 5.
The Republican Party of the CNMI Association, however, has long been officially affiliated with the U.S. national Republican Party.
