Gyung Rhee of YK Corp. turned over the $1,000 to NMIFA in a brief ceremony yesterday at the association's office at the TSL Plaza. Present to receive the donation were NMIFA president Jerry Tan, vice president Vickie Izuka, and technical director Johann Noetzel.

“Soccer is my first love. I used to play with a group of Koreans here when I was younger. Now, I don't play anymore, but I love to see children playing the sport, so in my own little way, I hope I can help them participate in soccer program,” Rhee said.

NMIFA officials thanked Rhee and assured him that the donation will be put into good use.

“Mr. Rhee has been supporting CNMI soccer for the past several years. With NMIFA running so many programs in the CNMI, we always face the challenge for finding funds for these events so we welcome any support we could get from the private sector,” Tan said.

“We appreciate Mr. Rhee's support to NMIFA. We our opening our youth fall season this weekend and the Marianas men's league on Sept. 23, so his donation is a huge push to these programs,” Noetzel said.

The NMIFA fall league will feature competitions in the co-ed U6, U8, U10, and U12 division, boys U18, and the girls and boys U15. Matches will be played at the various school pitches.

The boys U15 league will kick off the fall action when it holds two games tomorrow at the Oleai Sports Complex field. Defending champion MP United will face Tan Holdings at 5:30pm, while Paire will take on Shirley's at 7:30pm. Matansa completes the boys U15 field, which has its matches set for every Friday. The rest of the age group competitions will have their games every Saturday.

“The different clubs have been practicing for the past few months, so we're expecting to see excited games and great players this season,” Tan said.

Forty-one teams are entered in the fall league with the U8, U10, and U12 having seven squads each, the U6, girls U15 and boys U18 luring five apiece.
