D&Q outclassed Kanoa Resort in the opener of the 2012 Tan Holdings Inter-Company Basketball League, while JP Centre and Shirley's Coffee Shop posted double-digit winning margins last Sunday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium of the TSL Sports Complex.
Former CNMI National Team member Jack Lizama took the cudgels for D&Q in the fourth quarter to lift his squad to a 91-86 win. Lizama, who saw limited minutes in the third period and was held to 4 points in that canto, had 10 markers in the fourth quarter and finished with a game-high 32 points.
With Lizama letting his teammates run their offense in the third period, D&Q fell behind as much as 9 points before Shane Mendiola scored 5 straight points and the former added 4 in the closing minutes, while Ariel Jinang made a fastbreak layup to grab the lead, 65-64.
Lizama then started out for D&Q in the fourth canto and stayed at the forefront of his team's offense for their debut win.
JP Centre 86, POI 55
JP Centre had a rousing debut in the league, routing POI.
Bruiser Johnmarch Ong top-scored for JP Centre, firing 22 points, while four others also finished in double figures for the team's balance scoring. Dino Valdez and Mark Rabago chipped in 17 and Roel Cadauan and Ferdie de la Torre added 11 and 10, respectively.
A 24-13 scoring run in the first quarter was all JP Centre needed to pull away en route to the big 31-point victory. Valdez made two triples, while Rabago drilled one in JP Centre's strong start and the former finished the opening canto strong with 11 points.
Valdez's teammates stepped up in the last three quarters to whip POI.
Shirley's 75, Fiesta 65
In the third game, Shirley's stunned defending champion Fiesta Resort & Spa.
Shirley's played better in the second half to take the 10-point win.
The match was tied at the break, 39-all, when Fradel Sedillo scored 10 points in the third period to put Shirley's in the lead, 59-51. Then Shirley's opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back triples to keep its momentum, while Erick Dela Rosa scored 6 of the team's last 8 points to complete the upset.
Sedillo paced Shirley's with his 28 markers, while Dela Rosa and Rommel Usi contributed 16 and 14, respectively. Elmer Esdrelon had 31 for Fiesta, while Adonis Macoto made 19, and the rest of their teammates drilled no more than two field goals.
