PIC stretches streak; Ashley's rebounds

Ashley's Marlon De Dios, right, bangs into the defense of Servitek's George Cruz and draws a foul, too, during the second quarter of their game in the Emon Lodge caging last Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. (Roselyn B. Monroyo) Pacific Islands Club extended its winning run, while Ashley's recovered from its debut loss, following their victories against separate foes in the 2012 Emon Lodge 179 Basketball League-Docomo Brotherhood Cup last Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

In the curtain raiser, Ashley's (1-1) whipped Servitek (0-2), 89-76, while PIC outclassed Fong's Bakery (1-1), 89-77. PIC now has a 3-0 record for the solo lead in the 10-team field, one win ahead of the defending champion Mobil (2-0).

The trio of James Abuy, Bart Demapan, and Darwin Barbo proved to be too much for Fong's Bakery. Abuy had 23 points and converted four triples, while Demapan and Barbo added 21 and 18, respectively.

Abuy drilled back-to-back triples to end the first quarter with PIC ahead, 18-15. The San Antonio-based team never relinquished the driver's seat from thereon, as while Abuy was consistent with his outside shots, Barbo and Demapan asserted their might in the paint.

Demapan drained 10 of his total output in the second canto for their 40-33 halftime advantage, while Barbo took over in the third, nailing 9 markers, as PIC upped the lead to double digits, 65-55.

Then in the fourth canto, the PIC trio scored at least two field foal apiece to foil Fong's repeated comeback bids. Fong's Bakery had four players breaking into double digits, but could not overhaul PIC's lead, as the former's points were scattered in all four quarters and it could not get into its rhythm.

In the first game, Ashley's regrouped after falling behind in the first quarter en route to the 13-point victory against Servitek.

Down by nine at the end of the first period, 15-24, Rolly Paraiso anchored Ashley's recovery in the second period, scoring 8 points. Ashley's outgunned Servitek in the second canto, 26-14, to turn the tables at the break, 41-38.

Clayton Kenty, who had 11 points for Servitek in the opening canto, was limited to one field in the second frame, and his team played catch up since that meldown.

Manolo Manalo paced Ashley's with his 19 points and drew a lot of support from his teammates. Joe Ito and Paraiso chipped in 10 apiece and six others contributed at least 5 points apiece.

Kenty and George Cruz logged 17 and 19 markers, respectively, and only three other Servitek players added at least 8 points each.
