IDK Who, UCC share lead

UCC's Danica Canedo, left, beats an Ichiban player for the rebound during their first outing in the Kanoa women's caging at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium. (Roselyn B. Monroyo) IDK Who and UCC opened the second round of the 2012 Kanoa Resort Women's Fall Basketball League with separate wins last Friday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.

IDK Who slipped past Kiss My Pass (2-2), 44-40, to avenge its first-round loss (52-54) and improve to a 3-1 record. UCC holds the same mark, as it walloped Ichiban (0-4) in the other game last weekend, 40-29, duplicating the former's 64-18 rout of the latter in the league opener early this month.

UCC held the young Ichiban crew to one field goal in the first period to take the early lead, 11-2. Ichiban improved its shooting in the last three quarters, but still fell short of breaking into the win column.

An 11-8 scoring in the second canto moved Ichiban within six at the break, 13-19, but UCC regained control of the match in the second half to foil the former's upset bid.

Rachel Abrams and Danica Canedo paced UCC with 9 points, while four of their teammates added at least 4 markers apiece for the team's balance offense. Marlene Lumabi paced Ichiban with her 10 points.

In the second game, IDK Who limited Kiss My Pass to single digit scoring in the second and third quarters to gain enough cushion en route to its 4-point victory.

Kiss My Pass was on top of its game right at the opening buzzer, posting a 17-9 advantage. Sisters Jeraldine and Jeralyn Castillo did most of the damage for Kiss My Pass in the first period, as they combined for 15 of their total production.

IDK Who, which was held to three field goals in the first canto, then began hitting its marks and at the same time tightened up its defense in the second frame to grab the upper hand at halftime, 22-21. After a strong start, Kiss My Pass converted only one field goal off Jeralyn Castillo's basket and drew one free throw each from Diane Pablo and Mikky Vargas.

Kiss My Pass's lackluster offense continued in the third period with none of its players making more than a field goal. IDK Who, on the other hand, doubled Kiss My Pass' third-quarter output, 14-7, to stretch its lead to 8, 36-28, heading into the final canto.

In the fourth quarter, Kiss My Pass managed score in double digits (12), but IDK Who answered with four crucial free throws in the homestretch to keep the lead and the win.

Irish Pagarao top-scored for IDK Who with her 19 points, including two of the team's four charities in the fourth canto. Jeralyn Castillo had 17 for Kiss My Pass.
