The Rotary Club of Saipan will purchase 1,140 dictionaries for distribution to third graders in public schools on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota this year.
Rotary secretary Richard Cody said yesterday that he was contacted by a Guam Rotary Club official to find out the exact number of dictionaries to be ordered.
Cody said he worked with the club's New Generation director, Jeff Boyer, to come up with the final number of dictionaries they need.
He said they already placed the order and mailed the payment to Guam yesterday.
Now on its third year, Rotary Club of Saipan's dictionary project promotes education and literacy among third graders who are at the age when they can better absorb information from reference materials.
About 1,000 dictionaries were distributed to third graders during school year 2011-2012. Delta Air Lines, an annual sponsor of the Rotary Club of Saipan's Parade of Books event, expressed its support for the project by paying for the cost of over 1,000 dictionaries, using funds from its yearly golf tournament.
Last school year, some 800 students on the three islands received the dictionaries, which cost over $1,500. The project was made possible with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Northern Guam, SoCal Dictionary Project of the Rotary Club of Pacific Basin out of San Diego, and Delta Air Lines.
Besides the dictionary project, the Rotary Club of Saipan also hosts annually for elementary students the Parade of Books event.
