PIC hosts Asia Flow Tour qualifier

Action in Pacific Islands Club's Flowrider will take place this weekend as it hosts the 6th Annual International Point Break Championship. (Contributed Photo) Pacific Islands Club is once again partnering with Delta Airlines for the 6th Annual International Point Break Championship.

The event is set to start this Friday at 5pm with the expert and open divisions qualifying heats, which will determine the seeding of Saturday's main event competition, scheduled to begin at 10am.

Riders from Korea, Japan, Russia and Guam will be battling Saipan's best, as they all try to secure spots in the Asia Flow Tour Finals, which will be held at the Wave House Sentosa in Singapore on Oct. 6.

The competing divisions include grommets (ages 11 and under), kids (ages 12 to17), men's and women's bodyboard open, expert bodyboard, and men's and women's expert standing flowboard.

So far about 10 local competitors have signed up and more are expected to show. Organizers are expecting a similar turnout to last year's 42, as Korea and Japan bets are arriving anytime this week.

Entrance fees are $30 for adults and $20 for kids and grommets and registration deadline is set for 2pm Friday.

Last year, the winners list included grommets' Hein Maeda; kids' Matt Maeda; women's bodyboard open's Mi Ju of Korea; men's bodyboard open's Yuh Suzuki of Japan; women's expert flowboard's Hway Yeon Park of Korea; men's expert flowboard's Chi Suof Korea; and expert bodyboard's Yuh Suzuki. Yeon Park, Su, and Suzuki all qualified for the Asia Flow Series Finals.

Moreover, winners of the AFTF will then be flown to Utah for the World Championships scheduled for Oct. 13.

With PIC hosting the qualifier anew this weekend, the hotel's Flowrider attraction will not be open to the public during the competition or from 10am to 5pm.

Meanwhile, PIC would like to thank Pacific Trading Company (Monster/Gatorade), Quicksilver, Boarderline, Docomo Pacific, Da 670 Shop, Hollywood Theaters, D&Q International Distributors, Japan Flow Rider Association, Triple J Wholesalers, and Thai Massage for supporting the competition.
