After a roller-coaster ride in its first three games, Brabu Pharmacy/Ashley's finally notched consecutive wins in the 2012 Emon Lodge 179 Basketball League-Docomo Brotherhood Cup after downing Armtech, 83-73, last Tuesday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Brabu/Ashley's second straight win improved its record to 3-2, good for solo third place in the team standings, while Armatech dropped to a disappointing 0-4 slate.
Good player rotation allowed Brabu/Ashley's to dominate Armatech, which in contrast found it hard to get an effective combination on the floor. Though Armatech's top gun Elmer Esdrelon scored 25 points, he could not get his game in sync with the rest of his teammates and the absence of big men Bruce Berline and Jehn Joyner also hurt the team badly.
Brabu/Ashley's had no problems with its starters and it even got a lift from its second stringers. Elgene Mangali, Brandon Talania, Bernard Aquino, and Marlon De Dios, who led the squad's starting five combined for 54 points, while Rolly Paraiso and Manolo Manalo came off the bench and drilled 11 and 9, respectively.
Mangali sizzled early, firing 11 points to lift Brabu/Ashley's to a 24-10 advantage. Armatech made little headway in the second period behind Esdrelon and sliced the deficit to 2 at the break, 34-36, however Mangali and company played beautiful music together in the second half for their 10-point victory.
Armatech was still in the game down by 3 after Ferdie Tobias hit a triple, 68-71, with still over four minutes left when Mangali, De Dios, Talania, and Paraiso made rally halting baskets to deny their foe's the elusive first win.
Hoopaholics 90, Servitek 46
In the first game, Hoopaholics/Oceanside Bar had a walk in the park against hapless Servitek.
Kelvin Fitial threw the early punches for the Hoops, posting 10 points to give the team a 22-12 edge. The Hoops went on to pad the lead in the last three quarters. Servitek had its worst game in the third, making only 4 points to face a huge 26-66 deficit.
Trevor Ogumoro paced the Hoops with his 20 points, while Fitial finished with 12. The Hoopaholics are ranked second in the nine-team field behind unbeaten Pacific Islands Club (4-0) and Mobil (4-0), while Servitek is at the bottom of the standings with a dismal 0-5 slate.
