Shen is new ASNMC president

Chenglong “Alex” Shen, a liberal arts student at the Northern Marianas College, is the new president of the Associated Students of NMC.

Based on the official result of the two-day election, Shen received the most number of votes over two other contenders who previously served the position.

Shen defeated former ASNMC presidents Lawrence Camacho and Antonio Tiples in a three-way race that saw the participation of over 300 voters.

As ASNMC president, Shen will be an honorary member of the Board of Regents, the policymaking body of NMC. He replaces Camacho.

The election drew only 323 votes-a small portion of the college's nearly 1,300 enrollees this fall semester.

Six other students were elected in this week's polls for the new set of officers for academic year 2012-2013.

Richard Pizarro, who ran unopposed, is the new vice president. Pizarro is taking computer applications and business management programs at the college.

The council's new treasurer is Anne Julia Padilla, a business program major who won over liberal arts students Faithful Mendiola and Evert Van Der Maas. Jolly Ann Cruz from the elementary education program bested Christina Shaunte Tudela from the natural resources management program for the secretary position.

This year's council senators are Jae Hee Kim, from the elementary education program; Daniel Isaac Brown, from the rehabilitation human services program; and Evert Van Der Maas, from the liberal arts program.
