JP Centre edges Fiesta Resort

JP Centre's John March Ong, center, drives and draws a foul on Fiesta's Roland Galag during the fourth quarter of their game in the Tan Holdings caging last Saturday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium. (Roselyn B. Monroyo) JP Centre slipped past defending champion Fiesta Resort & Spa, 79-74, in the third game in the 2012 Tan Holdings Inter-Company Basketball League last Saturday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium of the TSL Sports Complex.

Jershwin Angeles made back-to-back fastbreak layups, Rowell Cadauan drilled an insurance free throw, and Ferdie de la Torre canned a buzzer-beating jumper to lift JP Centre to a 2-1 record and hand Fiesta its third loss in as many games.

Fiesta had the lead for the last time at the 74-72 count after Elmer Esdrelon went 2-for-2 from the stripe, with 1:34 left on the clock. Teams traded errors in the ensuing plays and Fiesta also missed a couple of shots and when JP Centre got the defensive rebounds, Angeles waited for the outlet and escaped with two fastbreak layups against Esdrelon.

Ahead by two, 76-74, JP Centre got possession back when Roland Galag was caught stepping on the sideline after an inbound play, 23.4 seconds remaining on the clock. Fiesta then gave up a foul, sending Cadauan to the line. He made his first charity and missed the second and de la Torre tapped the ball out in the rebound play with Dino Valdez picking it up and dishing if off back to the former, who drained the right baseline jumper at the buzzer.

Shirley's 73, Kanoa 70

The first game of the weekend was also a close one with Shirley's Coffee Shop outclassing Kanoa.

Rommel Usi scored 5 of Shirley's last 7 points, including a crucial three in the homestretch. He finished with 18 points, just 2 markers behind Shirley's top-scorer Erick Dela Rosa.

Ryan Manglona paced Kanoa with his 18 points, while Leonad Sablan added 17.

Shirley's held Kanoa to 12 points in the second canto, turning an 18-22 deficit to a 43-34 halftime advantage. Kanoa played catch up since then and failed to steal the win, as Usi and Dela Rosa were there to save Shirley's, which is still unbeaten in three games.

CTSI 62, POI 55

CTSI is also undefeated after three matches, following the 7-point win over POI.

Jack Lizama logged 9 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter to keep CTSI's perfect record and deny POI entry to the win column. POI (0-3) forced a deadlock at the end of the third, 45-all, but Lizama took over in the fourth to deny the former's upset bid.

Besides Lizama, Ariel Jinang also tallied twin digits for CTSI with his 20 markers. Ramsa Tenepere and Mitch Sablan had 13 and 11 points, respectively, for POI.
