Hapi Gabriel chase the shuttlecock during his and Andrew Galvez's semis game against Wowie Abuel and Joseph Santos in the men's Class A doubles division of the Shirley's badminton tournament last Saturday at the TSL Sports Complex. (Roselyn B. Monroyo) The 2012 Shirley's Coffee Shop Singles/Doubles Badminton Tournament wrapped up last Sunday at the TSL Sports Complex, producing multiple winners in the men's division.

In the men's Class A singles, Andreau Galvez swept rival Ferdie Arago in the finals. Galvez pulled off a close 21-18 victory in the first game before cruising to a 21-14 triumph in the second game. Joining Galvez and Arago in the Top 3 was Macoi Aguda, who defeated Sam Jones in the battle for third place, 21-18, 21-16.

Galvez also clinched the men's Class A doubles crown, teaming up with Hapi Gabriel. The winning duo needed only two games to down Jones and Glenn Bluutjens, 21-16, 21-17.

In Class B, Jexler Caranto also recorded twin wins. In the singles finale, he prevailed over Oh Im Bog, 21-14, 21-15. Wowie Abuel rounded out the Top 3 with a victory via forfeiture against Chris Hilario.

In the doubles, Caranto joined forces with Joel Ortega and outclassed Abuel and John Revilla. The first game on the men's Class B doubles finale was a neck-and-neck battle with Caranto and Ortega escaping with a 23-21 win. The second game was also a close one with the eventual champions nailing a 21-17 victory.

Oh and Raj Jayalal also won in two games against Vic Regis and Jojo Savellano in the battle for third place in the men's Class B doubles.

Duplicating Caranto and Galvez's feats was Ramir Belialba. In the men's Class C singles finals, Belialba survived Ortega in three games. Belialba took the opening game, 21-15, but Ortega extended the finals with a 21-18 triumph in the second game. Then in the deciding third game, Belialba regained his bearings and eked out a 21-16 victory.

Brendon Talania joined Belialba and Ortega in the Top 3 with his 21-14, 21-16 victory against Bernard Aquino in the consolation game.

In the men's Class B doubles finals, Belialba partnered with Rommel Bartolome and again the title showdown was decided in three games. Bartolome and Belialba drew first blood, 21-18, but failed to wrap up the finals early when Jordan Pangilinan and Celso Agui recovered in the second game with a 21-17 win. Then in the third set, Bartolome and Belialba got their acts together to post a 21-15 victory.

Completing the Top 3 in the men's Class C doubles were Pzao Shung Xiun and Kim Young Sook, who swept Ortega and Lagrazon in the consolation match, 21-18, 21-15.

Meanwhile, results of the title games in the women's division will be released next week.
