Saipan's very first “Mad Hatter's” Ultimate Hat Tournament is scheduled for Oct. 6 at the baseball field across from Mariana Resort.
“We look forward to everyone coming out and having a great time. We understand that Club 200 is on the evening of our event, but rest assured we plan to get the games going early enough so you won't miss out on your chance to win big and enjoy the fun,” stated organizers Amanda Allen and Trey Dun in a recent email.
Headlined as a hat tournament, some interesting hats will be given as prizes in addition to various other accolades, including, but not limited to discs and drinks. Games start at 8:30am.
Players will be ranked based on experience and athleticism and teams will be picked out of a hat. Certain hats will represent the players' different attributes and those with similar skill sets will be divided to help create balanced teams.
“We are having this tournament to encourage newcomers to learn more about the game, have the opportunity to play with off-island players, and have a fun day to improve their throw and show off their MAD skills,” added Allen.
Several players from Guam and at least one from Japan are coming over to appear in the inaugural event.
Awards will be presented to the first and last placed teams, as well as the most spirited squad. There will also be awards for the most valuable player, most “fun” player, and a few others.
The tournament bracket will be determined by the turnout, however every team is guaranteed three or four games. It is a coed event and open to any interested individuals.
Pre-registration is preferred and costs only $10 for a day full of fun. Late registrants will be accepted on the day of the event until 8:30am for $12; the cost covers food, drinks, and prizes, which will be on hand throughout the day.
Although it is still commonly referred to today as “Ultimate Frisbee”, the latter part of the term had to be removed because of copyright laws pertaining to the Frisbee flying disc manufacturer.
