No government shutdown tomorrow

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial signed the fiscal year 2013 budget bill into law Sunday afternoon, preventing a partial government shutdown that could have sent over 1,500 government employees temporarily jobless starting tomorrow.

This means all government employees will be reporting for work tomorrow, Oct. 1, the start of FY 2013.

Some lawmakers were on hand to witness the governor's signing of the $114-million budget law at the Fiesta Resort & Spa.

Today is the last day for the government to have a new budget in place; otherwise there would be a shutdown beginning tomorrow, as the NMI Constitution requires.

Senate President Paul Manglona (Ind-Rota) said a few minutes ago that he's happy a shutdown has been prevented.

“But I wish governor Fitial will focus on hospital emergency, PSS [Public School System], retirement issues, and economy, and running our government instead of politics only,” Manglona told Saipan Tribune.

More details to follow.
