Buckingham's extradition sought

Rep. Frank Dela Cruz (R-Saipan) is asking Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and acting attorney general Viola Alepuyo to initiate proceedings for the extradition of former attorney general Edward T. Buckingham, who has been declared a fugitive from justice.

Dela Cruz pre-filed House Resolution 17-114 on Thursday, seeking to bring back Buckingham to the CNMI to face the criminal charges filed against him by the Office of the Public Auditor.

These charges were in connection with his hosting of a political campaign in 2010, and obstruction of justice in August 2012 when he allegedly asked the use of police and ports police officers to help shield him from being served a penal summons for criminal charges, among other things.

On Sept. 11, 2012, judge David Wiseman issued an order declaring Buckingham a fugitive from justice.

Wiseman denied without prejudice Buckingham’s motion to quash the $50,000 bench warrant he issued when Buckingham failed to attend the hearing last Aug. 6.
