Two in a row for Rollers 1; Ol'Aces prevail

The Rollers 1 and Oleai Ol'Aces notched wins over separate opponents in the U20 division games in the 2012 Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League last Friday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

The Rollers 1 chased down Hi-5 (1-2) in the fourth quarter and stole the win, 60-55, while the Ol'Aces cruised past RBC's Apage Torchbearers (0-4) in the second half for a 46-32 victory.

The victory was second in a row for the Rollers 1 after losing its debut, while the third time was a charm for the Ol'Aces, who dropped their first two matches.

Frank Macahito and Emerson Feria teamed up for 11 points in the first quarter to put Hi-5 in the driver's seat, 13-9. Feria then hooked up with Rey Cabaltica in the second quarter and Hi-5 remained in control at the half, 29-24.

John Darag and Ralph Francisco tallied seven points apiece in the first half to keep the Rollers 1 in the game. However, Hi-5 did not sallow down after the break and pressed on, 44-39, heading into crunch time. Macahito delivered nine markers in the third quarter, while his teammates shadowed Darag.

Francisco would not be denied, however, in the payoff period and scrambled for seven points, while his teammates also stepped up. In contrast, only Macahito and Cabaltica fought for Hi-5 in the fourth, as they combined for 10 markers.

Darag and Francisco turned in a dual effort of 28 points and received help from Ezra Caro and Renan Lansang, who had 11 and 8 markers, respectively. Feria and Macahito combined for 34 points.

In the second game, Allen Yu and David Lin dropped in a couple of baskets early on to give the Torchbearers a shaky 8-7 lead.

The Torchbearers then hung tough against the Ol'Aces through the second quarter in what was a highly defensive period that ended in a deadlock, 11-all.

The Ol'Aces awoke, however after the break and jumped in front, 32-16, in the third quarter behind the eight points of Joseph Aguilar. The Ol'Aces were never threatened from thereon and ran away with the 14-point win.

Hi-5 55 - Macahito 18, Feria 16, Cabaltica 11, Hofschneider 6, Ferrer 3, Hockett 1.

Ol'Aces 46 - Olopai 10, Alfred 9, Aguilar 8, Lisua 4, C. Rangamar 4, Rogolifoi 4, Ichihara 3, Kaipat 2, J. Rangamar 2 .

Agape Torchbearers 32 - Al Yu 12, Lin 9, Am Yu 3, W. Yu 3, Thuan 2, Li 2, Chan 1.

Scoring by quarters: 7-8, 11-11, 32-16, 46-32.
