16 teams vie for Tan Holdings caging title

The Tan Holdings' 40th Anniversary Sports Festival-Open Basketball Tournament starts tonight and runs until Sunday night with 16 teams competing for the championship at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium in Gualo Rai.

The list includes the Century Insurance Old Aces, CTSI-Hoops, the TSL Foundation Princes, a Tribe's Bar team, Barefoot Bar's Kagman-B, RMS's Rebelz, the Docomo Pacific Cosmos, D&Q International Distributors, Chamber Bar, Kanoa Resort, Fiesta Resort & Spa's Ol'Aces, a Koblerville crew representing Century Hotel, Nami Bar's Girl Power, Saipan Tribune, a POI Aviation-Agape group, and Isla Cafe.

The competition starts at 5:30pm and four matches in Pool 1 will be played in the opening day. Pool 2's opening round takes place tomorrow, also beginning at 5:30pm with another set of four games to be played in 45-minute increments. Inter-pool play resumes Saturday morning, from 9:30am until roughly 5pm with a scheduled break from 12:30pm to 2pm.

Then the overall champion will be crowned after Sunday's all-day affair also scheduled from 9:30am through 5pm with a midday break in between.

Up for grabs in the tournament are $400 worth of sports equipment for the winners, $300 to the runner-up, $200 to third, and $100 to fourth place.

Games will be played under FIBA rules with two 15-minute halves, however the first team to break 40 points with at least a two-point lead will automatically be declared the winner.

Teams will be randomly divided into four pools and play six games where the Top 2 teams of each pool will advance to the single elimination bracket-style playoffs; the qualifying groups will then randomly receive their playoff seats. Notably, the finals will be played in two 20-minute halves and the “first to 40” rule will not be implemented.

Unified Basketball Association is organizing the tournament and for more information, contact UBA's James Lee at 483-0290 or email unifiedbasketballassociation@gmail.com.
