The Rollers 2 extended its streak to five after besting the winless Kagman, 63-53, during their U20 division game in the 2012 Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League last Wednesday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Prince Factor was quick to make himself a factor in the game, as he scored six points in the first quarter. JP Iglesias also found his mark early, firing a triple to help the Rollers 2 construct a 17-12 lead.
Then it the second quarter, it was CJ Morales and Mike Espinosa's turn to team up for the Rollers 2. They combined for 15 points in the second frame, allowing the Rollers 2 to open a healthy 34-22 halftime advantage.
While the Rollers 2 had an impressive offensive attack, it also contained Kagman center Jason Lamkin to 8 points in the first half to take control of the game. Lamkin towers above everyone else on the court, however Rollers 2 somehow found a way to neutralize him on both ends. Kagman's streaky guard, Jonathan Santos, was also held to only a couple baskets through two frames.
Lamkin tallied 13 points in the third quarter in an effort to ignite a rally, but Kagman still trailed, 43-50, heading into crunch time.
Rollers 2 did a good job controlling the pace of the game, as it milked the clock throughout the fourth quarter. Its ball handlers made smart passes in the clutch and found the open man and five different players accounted for the Rollers 2's offense down the homestretch.
Factor led a mixed bag of scorers with 11 points, while Lamkin's game-high of 22 did not receive nearly enough support.
The Rollers 2's impressive run in the league so far has caused a lot of people to scratch their heads. The Rollers 2 is surpassing expectations even though it is the youngest and smallest team in the field. Roller 2 players are showing team chemistry, speed, and an advanced grasp of basketball fundamentals for their age, in addition to arguably the biggest heart out of everyone.
Meanwhile, the Oleai Aces (1-2) took on LD Prime (2-3) last night, while today's double-feature begins with the defending champions Sonics (3-0) looking to continue their streak against the resurging Chalan Kanoa Saints (2-1) at 5:30pm. Then in the second game, Kagman (0-3) faces RBC's Agape Torchbearers (0-4) in the battle of winless squads.
Other teams entered in the U20 division are Proa (3-1), Rollers 1 (2-2), and Hi-5 (2-2).
