Hustlers, Equalizers enjoy top view in SBA league

Utopia Sports Bar's Blue Ice Hustlers and Bammy's Restaurant & Bar's Equalizers are currently manning the top spot in Saipan Billiards Association's 15th Budweiser Open 8-Ball League.

In the Tuesday division, Blue Ice Hustlers squeaked past the seventh-ranked 19th Hole Bar's Titans I (64-101), 8-7, at home last week and much to the former's surprise, they ended up snagging the lead in the standings.

The new frontrunners benefited from former packleader and two-time defending league champion IT&E Voyagers' 6-9 loss to sister team IT&E Incredibles (93-72) of Oceanside Bar & Grill.

The aftermath of last week's round left the Blue Ice Hustlers in first place with their 100-65 losses. IT&E Voyagers dropped to a 98-67 mark and third position.

In other results, formerly third-ranked Joe's Steakhouse's Docomo Pacific Home Boyz (99-66) wedged itself into second place after imposing a stout 11-4 home rout over Poseidon Bar & Grill-Caboose Team Crazy 8 (61-104), while Yuichiros Printing (67-98) worked out a much needed 8-7 upset at home over Bammy's Triggers (78-87).

Tuesday division notables include Blue Ice Hustlers' Jerry Soriano and IT&E Incredibles' Chester Hamoy, who both ran the table five times so far this season, while IT&E Voyagers' Arjay Nonato and Docomo Home Boyz's Robert Sanciangco each sunk the eight-ball off the break.

In the Thursday division, the Equalizers went into Wild Bill's Bar & Grill and feasted on Shark Attack (79-86), 12-3, to breach both a two-way tie for the top spot with 19th Hole's Titans II (99-66), and the 100-mark milestone in wins. The newly lone frontrunners improved to a 101-64 card.

In other results, Titans II overcame Jonny's Bar & Grill's Team SCS (70-95), 10-5, at home, while The Waterfront's Eight It! (92-73) crushed 19th Hole's Eagles (54-111), 12-3, also at home.

Thursday division notables include “Run The Table” leaders Erwin Gomez (4) of Team SCS and Eight It!'s Rey Pinangay (3), while Eagles' Ken Phillips and Equalizers' Jerry Soriano have each sunk the eight ball off the break.

The league continues this week with Thursday's pairings showing the Titans II posing as home versus the Eagles; the Equalizers calling over Eight It; and Team SCS setting up for Shark Attack. In the Tuesday division matchups, Crazy 8 will host the Blue Ice Hustlers; the IT&E Incredibles will face Yuichiros Printing; the Titans I will invite the IT&E Voyagers; and the Triggers will meet the Docomo Home Boyz.
