The defending champions Sonics lit up the grasshopper-green Agape Torchbearers, 103-17, during their U20 division game in the 2012 Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League last Wednesday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The win improved Sonics' flawless run to five, while Agape is dreading an even bigger streak of six straight losses.
The Sonics shot out of a cannon at the tip and whistled in front after the first quarter, 32-4. They then shut out the Torchbearers in the second period and pulled even further way at the half, 50-4.
It was a free-for-all for the reigning champions from the start and the Sonics piled on another 18-point chunk in the third quarter for a lopsided tally, 68-8, heading into the final period.
Agape was limited to just four points in the third quarter before it managed to surpass its total output from the first three quarters in the last frame. However, in reality, Agape really got a healthy dose of the Sonics' full court press.
The Sonics forced a multitude of turnovers from the backcourt and dominated their opponents in all facets. Agape was visibly outclassed, but they took the whooping in stride, as they learned some things after gaining some firsthand experience against one of Saipan's most organized quality teams.
Nevin Salem led three other teammates in double figures with his 21 points. Melvin Cadiang chipped in 14, and Bryl Alegre and Jaymark De Guzman added 10 apiece.
Meanwhile, Hi-5 (1-3) took on the Chalan Kanoa Saints (2-2) yesterday, and today's U20 game will have the CK Saints meeting the undefeated Rollers 2 (5-0) at 5:30pm
The remaining standings include Mariana Resort's Proa (3-1), Rollers 1 (2-1), Oleai Ol'Aces (2-2), LD Prime (2-4), and Kagman (1-3).
Sonics 103 - Salem 21, Cadiang 14, Alegre 10, De Guzman 10, Tudela 9, Aranda 8, Sula 8, Villanueva 8, Del Rosario 6, Caro 4, Mariano 4.
Agape Torchbearers 17 - Chan 7, Li 5, Chen 2, Gou 2, Ai.
Scoring by quarters: 32-4, 50-4, 68-8, 103-17.
