The Mount Carmel School's Lady Knights marched past the Lady Ayuyus of Kagman High School, 53-45, during the varsity division game in the 2012-2012 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Girls Basketball League last Wednesday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
The tardy Lady Knights recovered with a nice win after giving up a forfeiture to the defending champions MHS Lady Dolphins (1-0 ) on opening day, while KHS remains winless after two tries.
Mt. Carmel's Kaylani Lebria and Michelle Kautz both banged in three baskets apiece in the opening canto to give the Lady Knights an early 13-8 favor.
Kagman did not go away, however, as the second quarter turned into a shootout and Mt. Carmel's lead was down to one possession, 29-26. Anna Ada, Janet Kaipat, and Tracy Pelep provided the bulk of the Lady Ayuyus' production in the first two frames to keep the Lady Knights within striking distance.
Kautz then caught fire after the break and drained a pair of three-pointers that afforded her Knights some much needed separation, 47-35, heading into crunch time. She finished the third quarter with 10 markers.
Kagman hung around for half of the third quarter, but appeared in disarray late in the game. Ada and Kaipat tried to carry the Lady Ayuyus to a comeback apparent at the start of the final period, but in the end, they could not get enough shots to fall in the clutch.
Mt. Carmel's offense also cooled off in the fourth, but the Lady Knights benefited from more misfires from Kagman and managed to sit on the driver's seat until the final buzzer.
Lebria and Kautz combined for 41 points for Mt. Carmel, while Ada scrambled for a team-high 14 in the shortcoming.
The season continues today at 4:30pm with a junior varsity game between MHS and Kagman. The two schools' varsity squads will then take the floor in the second game.
