8 teams vie for championship

The Tan Holdings' 40th Anniversary Sports Festival Basketball Tournament is down to eight teams after last week's elimination games at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium of the TSL Sports Complex.

The remaining contenders are Tribes Bar, RMS Saipan, D&Q International Distributors, Chambre Bar, the Cosmos, Nami Bar, and CTSI Logistics. The original 16 teams were trimmed to half last weekend and the first single elimination playoff rounds tipped off yesterday.

Today's semifinals begin at 9:30am, while the finals is set for 1:45pm. A consolation match at 1pm precedes the championship game.

The champion team gets $400 worth of sports equipment, while $300 will be awarded to the runner-up, $200 to third place, and $100 to the fourth finisher.

Games are being played under a pair of 15-minute halves and follow FIBA rules, however as a special rule, the first team to reach 40 points, with a two-point lead, will automatically be declared the winner. Then in the finals, teams will play under two 20-minute halves with omission of the special “first to 40” rule.
