High-Five leads winners in Masters caging

Hi-Five's Roy Matagolai goes up strong to the basket for a transition layup against IT&E during their 35A game in the Masters caging last Friday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. (Walter Sutherland) Hi-Five, Konflikt, and Ask12B1 bagged wins in their respective games in the 2012 Masters Basketball Federation of the Northern Mariana Islands Recreational Basketball League over the weekend at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Hi-Five routed IT&E in the first 35A pairing, 88-66, while Konflikt defeated QQ Rent A Car in the second game last Friday, 92-81. In yesterday's curtain raiser and 40A match, Ask12B1 downed 8 Division, 78-62.

High-Five burned up the net in Friday's first match and buried a whopping 13 three-pointers in the blowout victory.

Three of the treys came in the first quarter, giving Hi-Five a 21-17 advantage. Another trio from long range made it a 41-29 lead at halftime. IT&E fell behind by 11, as it was limited to just 12 points in the second period.

Hi-Five continued to wax hot from downtown after the intermission, as it sunk six triples for a 71-48 lead. Ed Pangelinan and Haejun Park each lofted in a pair from behind the arch in the big push.

IT&E was way behind by the start of the final 10 minutes and Hi-Five rang in three more bombs anyways for good measure.

Pangelinan connected on five treys and scored 29 points, while Jose Tudela scrambled for 27 for IT&E.

In the second game, Konflikt and QQ were locked at 19-all after the opening canto before the former managed a slight edge at halftime, 45-41, thanks largely to the 11 points of Jun Alipio.

Konflikt then connected with a couple of three-pointers early in the third quarter and drew an eight-point tear from Sam Fernandez, who finished that frame with 11 for their promising 73-58 lead, heading into the final period.

QQ did not go quietly late in the game, however it could not find a way to stop Alipio, who added 8 more points in the fourth quarter to secure the win for Konflikt. Alipio finished with a game-high 21 points and his five other teammates scored in double figures, too. Jorge De Guzman also had 21 markers, but he drew help only from Jun Abedes and Marlon Sison, who teamed up for 33.

In yesterday's opening match, Ask12B1's Bernard Montano managed a couple of baskets just after the early tip, but 8 Division was on top after the opening frame, 17-13.

Martin Moreno swooped in to assist Montano in the second quarter and the former's 9 points put Ask12B1 in the driver's seat at halftime, 32-29.

Then in the third period, Jun Aque and James Abuy teamed up for a baker's dozen to up Ask12B1' lead, 57-43, en route to the easy win.

Montano had a team-high 21 points, while Moreno contributed 18. Norman Olpindo carried 8 Division with his 26 markers.

Meanwhile, more teams are still joining the competition and league organizers are currently working to pin down the official game schedule, per division. Coordinators are trying to revise a schedule that offers weekly evening matches on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
