Island Apparel, 2 others triumph in Masters caging

Joe Pangelinan's George Villasan, right, streaks to the basket against John Manglona's Robert Tamondong during their 50A game in the Masters caging last Sunday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. (Walter Cepeda Sutherland) Island Apparel, Graphics Printing, and Joe Pangelinan's team came away victors in last weekend's games in the 2012 Masters Basketball Federation of the NMI Recreational League at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Island Apparel outlasted the San Antonio Pit Bulls, 69-57, in the 40A division match last Sunday's; Graphics Printing torched Cybertech, 98-75, in the 45A pairing; and Pangelinan's team defeated John Manglona's squad, 72-62, in the 50A ticket.

Edgar Pangelinan got things rolling for Island Apparel with a couple of baskets and his teammates, Ray Lizama and Haejun Park, helped out with 9 points for their 17-11 lead at the end of the first period.

Then Ray Duenas took the baton for Island Apparel in the second quarter, scoring 6 markers. He received mixed support, while only Bobby Geli was able to create a steady flow of offense for Pit Bulls. Geli managed 11 points in the first half, but needed a partner in crime, and thus Island Apparel marched on at halftime, 32-23.

Lizama smelled blood after the break and delivered 10 big points in the third frame, while Geli was held to meager three buckets. Island Apparel held a 14-point advantage, 53-39, heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Pit Bulls put together their best scoring effort in the last quarter, but were really just treading water, as Island Apparel denied any thought of a late comeback. Lizama tossed in another 10 points down the homestretch and led all scorers with 27 points, while Geli was the only double-digit producer on his team with 23. Pangelinan and Park combined for 21 points for Island Apparel.

It was a bad day to start out cold for Cybertech, which ran directly into a red hot Graphics Printing led by Sonny Ebuen and Bernard Montano in the ensuing 45A pairing.

The two fire starters mustered 15 points in the opening canto to lift Graphics Printing to a 21-6 advantage.

Cybertech then got three long range shots to drop in the second quarter and briefly gained some ground, but nine different players averred points for Graphics Printing on the other end to remain in control at the half, 45-34.

Cybertech gave it all in the third quarter and managed to pull within three-possessions after the third period, 56-63. However, Graphics Printing countered in the fourth quarter with one final push of its own and ended up running away in convincing fashion. Jun Abedes led Cybertech's third quarter attack with 8 points and finished with a team-high 16, but was scoreless in the final period.

Moreover, Cybertech was never able to make a stand on defense at any point in the match and fell short in the closing leg, as Graphics Printing buried three more treys and a big dose of layups in transition for good measure.

Ebuen led all scorers with 23 points.

Joe Pangelinan's band got 8 points from Ed Manalili in the first quarter of the 50A affair for an early 20-14 advantage. The lead was stretched to double digits at halftime, 40-30, as Noel Puno and Manny Sitchon scored 6 points apiece in the second canto.

John Manglona's Robert Tamondong airmailed a trio of three-pointers in the second period and led the group at midpoint with a baker's dozen, but he and his teammates struggled to make a stand on the defensive end.

Joe Pangelinan's team kept chomping at the bit after the break and trudged ahead, 68-44, heading into the closing frame. The team slowed down quite a bit in the fourth quarter, but the victory was never in jeopardy.

Manalili turned in a team-high 20 points, while Tamondong led all scorers with 21.

Meanwhile, the season continues tomorrow with Saipan Water battling Erika's Catering in the 40A game at 6:30pm and Nat Banatasa's group taking on Island Apparel at 8pm.
