An off-duty security guard came to the aid of a female tourist who was hurt when the moped she was driving crashed on Middle Road, Navy Hill yesterday morning.
Jose Vito Cruz, 53, a security guard of G4S Security Services, helped the Japanese tourist stand up, brought her to a safe area in the parking lot of Twins Supermarket, and called 911.
Seeing that the tourist was bleeding from her injuries, Cruz got tissue paper from the store and wiped the victim's bruises on her hands and legs with water.
After 20 minutes, an ambulance came and transported the tourist to Commonwealth Health Center. The tourist's female companion also joined her in the ambulance.
Saipan Tribune learned from witnesses that the victim and her companion, both in their early 20s and guests at Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan, were separately riding mopeds on the outer lane of the highway on their way to Marpi.
One moped then lost control, possibly after hitting rocks brought by runoff near Twins Supermarket at 10:40am. The moped crashed on the inner lane. The second tourist pulled over to help her companion.
Cruz, who was coming from the Navy Hill area, was about to proceed to Middle Road on his way to Garapan when he saw the accident. He immediately came to their rescue. Since he speaks Japanese, he assisted the victim and her companion, then repeatedly called for an ambulance. Other bystanders also helped the tourists.
The moped had only minor damage.
