Boating Safety rescues stranded surfer

DPS Boating Safety Officers Mike Camacho and Stanley Patris responded to a stranded surfer floating in the waters off the Sugar Dock Channel on Monday, Oct. 15, at about 1:13 pm.

The victim, 25-year-old Arvin Avila, was surfing when he had cramps. He was swept out to sea by the current. The waves were dangerously large and the current too strong for him to paddle back to safety. He floated in the water for over an hour, waiting for help.

Camacho and Patris borrowed the jet skis of Island Marine Sports behind Saipan World Resort and made contact with the victim around 1:30pm, bringing him back to shore.

Acting commissioner Aniceto T. Ogumoro is reminding the public to avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches during high hazardous surf conditions. (PR)
