Saipan International School's White Geckos streaked to their third win and nabbed first place in the team standings of the 2012-2013 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization High School Boys Volleyball League after sweeping the Grace Christian Academy's Eagles last Tuesday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
The clutch win highlighted the third round of the season, as it served the Eagles their first loss and earned SIS White bragging rights as the lone undefeated squad in the eight-team field.
Other winners from round three include the second-ranked MHS Blue Dolphins (2-1), Saipan Southern High School's Manta Rays (1-2), and MHS Yellow Dolphins (1-2), with the latter warranted a forfeit victory over Kagman High School's Ayuyus (0-3), who have been no-shows since opening day. Kagman's absence has skewed the standings a bit as SIS Green Geckos (2-1) and Mount Carmel School's Knights (1-2) have also been awarded unproven triumphs.
No games are set for today to give way to another league and the season will resume on Tuesday at 4pm with SIS White taking on SSHS on the north court and MHS Yellow colliding against SIS Green on the south end. Then at 5pm, KHS is scheduled to play MHS Blue on the north end, while GCA will square off against MCS on the south court.
SIS White was in sync last Tuesday and claimed the opening set, 25-14. SIS kept its rhythm through the second set to clinch the win, 25-19, and pinned its ears back in the final set, 15-7, to secure the sweep.
MHS Blue took the first set, 25-14, but SIS Green rallied in the second set, 25-18, to even the match. However in the end, MHS Blue rebounded and captured the deciding set 15-9.
The Manta Rays and the Knights fought tooth and nail in the opening set and when the dust cleared, SSHS had drawn first blood, 28-26. MCS gave its all in the first frame and forced it beyond regulation, but could not muster a second wind to knot up the count as SSHS sheltered the win, 25-18. The Rays went on to claim the third set, 15-11.
