Mariana Resort/Proa overwhelmed a shorthanded Kagman, 89-52, during their U20 division game in the 2012 Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League last Monday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Proa has now won four of its five games since opening day and is really coming into its own, while Kagman is going the other way and has bagged just one victory in five tries.
Proa suited up two full lineup changes in the match and utilized them efficiently to pick apart its opponents. The seven-man Kagman band stumbled out of the gate and fought as hard as it could for the next three quarters to claw back into the game and could have used the presence of a good chunk of its missing players.
Hopefully the cavalry arrives soon for Kagman, as it is scheduled to play the Chalan Kanoa Saints (2-4) today at 5:30pm. The Saints also need to recover quickly, after forfeiting games to Hi-5 (2-3) and Rollers 2 (6-0).
In any case, tomorrow's matches start at 5:30pm with Hi-5 taking on the Sonics (5-0) and Proa facing Rollers 1 (2-2). Other U20 standings include the Oleai Ol'Aces (2-2), LD Prime (2-4). and the Agape Torchbearers (0-6).
Proa spring boarded in front, 28-3, in the opening period, as Shane Diaz and Ichitaro Faisao combined for 18 points.
The hot pair took a seat in the second quarter, which helped pen up some offense for Kagman in the form of the combined 19 points of Jason Lampkin and Jesse Santos. However, Proa's second team managed to nail a couple of three-balls to keep the large cushion intact at the half, 40-24.
Diaz and Faisao returned after the intermission and essentially delivered the knockout blows in the third quarter. The duo combined for 14 points and received support from four others to give Proa a daunting 64-40 favor, heading into the final period.
Kagman was gassed at this point of the game and could not keep up with Proa's substitution regiment. LJ Hemley and Josh Villagomez snuck into the spotlight for Proa late in the game and hooked up for a dozen checks to complete the lopsided win.
Diaz finished with a team-high 17 points for Proa, while Faisao had 15. Lampkin led all scorers with 22.
Mariana Resort/Proa 89 - Diaz 17, Faisao 15, Mettao 12, Palacios 10, Capuyon 10, Hemley 8, Villagomez 6, Manalili 6, Sanarez 6.
