The 2012 Valentine N. Sengebau Poetry Competition will be held at the American Memorial Park Visitors Center Theater tomorrow, Oct. 23, at 6pm.
Admission is free and open to the public. Cash prizes totaling $1,000 will be awarded to the top six poets.
This annual event was established by the Northern Marianas Humanities Council to support the work of young poets on the islands and to honor the legacy of Micronesia's foremost poet, the late Valentine N. Sengebau.
In the junior division, students will be reciting poetry from Microchild, an anthology of Sengebau's poetry and a publication of the Council's Micronesian Authors Initiative.
In the senior division, students will be reciting original poetry with themes relating to culture, change, and/or identity in the Northern Marianas.
Junior division competitors will be scored on the quality of their recital while seniors will be judged on both content and recital quality.
First place finishers in each division will have their names inscribed on perpetual trophies that will be kept by their respective schools until next year's competition. First through third places in each division will also win cash prizes.
This competition is one of several Council programs in October to celebrate CNMI Humanities Month.
