Erika's Catering, Island Apparel triumph

Erika's Catering bested Marianas Water, 89-79, while Island Apparel held off LD Prime, 87-75, as the 40A matches in the 2012 Masters Basketball Federation of the NMI Recreational League took the center stage last Wednesday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Erika's Catering pulled off a come-from-behind win in the first 40A pairing, recovering from a 10-point deficit at halftime with Ferdie Tobias leading the team's second-half surge.

Dennis Pacheco started out with a hot hand and put together 8 points to lift Marianas Water to a slim 18-17 edge. Amor Casabuena then heated up in the second period and teamed up with Pacheco and the duo's 17 points trotted Marianas Water in front, 45-35, at halftime.

Facing a double-digit deficit at the pause, Erika's Catering roared back in the third period and swiped the lead, 62-56, thanks largely to the 14 points of Ferdie Tobias. Tobias then added 10 points in the final canto, while Edwin Santos contributed 7, as Erika's Catering coasted through the late minutes.

Tobias led all scorers with 38 points, while Marianas Water's Jun Abedes dashed for a dozen markers in what turned out to be a botched comeback attempt in the fourth, but did manage to turn a team-high 22 points.

In the second game, Island Apparel buried a trio of treys right out of the gate with two of them lofted by Edgar Pangelinan, who scored 10 points to help account for their 23-17 margin at the start of the second quarter.

Pangelinan tacked on 9 more points in the second period, as Island Apparel extended its lead to 12 at midpoint, 44-32.

Nat Banatasa led LD Prime through the first half with his 13 points and added 7 more markers in the third quarter to trim Island Apparel's lead to three possessions, 55-63, with the final 10 minutes yet to go. However in the end, Island Apparel proved to be too much to handle, as Pangelinan and Ray Duenas both finished strong with 8 points apiece to secure the feat.

Pangelinan lit up the scoreboard with 36 points, while Banatasa led on the short end with 22.
