Graphics Printing and Servitek won their respective games in the 45A division, while Joe Pangelinan's team triumphed in the 50A match in the Masters Basketball Federation of the Northern Mariana Islands Recreational League last Sunday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Servitek bested Bloody Mama, 87-79, in last weekend's curtain raiser, and Graphics Printing flanked LBT Appraisal in the other 45A pairing, 78-72, while Pangelinan's team overwhelmed Fong's Bakery, 81-71.
Bloody Mama assumed a 24-15 lead in the opening 10 minutes, as it received some early contributions from six different players. It maintained a 43-36 margin at the half, as Alex Ocampo and Frank Babauta hooked up for a dozen markers.
John Capuyon Sr. carried the torch for Servitek in the first quarter with his 11 points, while Jun Abedes and Boy Garcia picked up where he left off in the second quarter, combining for 13 markers.
Servitek then pinned it ears back after the pause and locked the match at 64-all, heading into the final period. Abedes led the third-quarter charge with 14 points and then he and Capuyon caught fire in the payoff period, burying a pair of three-balls each to help push Servitek past its rivals.
Abedes added 8 more points to his treys in the clutch and finished with a game-high 35 points, while Ocampo paced Bloody Mama with his 15 markers.
In the second 45A pairing, Elmer Pineda and Ray Sahagun each managed 6 points in the first quarter to provide LBT Appraisal with a 18-11 favor. However, Graphics Printing battled back to within a point at intermission, 32-33, off Ed Cosino's 7 markers and a handful of other donors.
LBT got back on its horse after the break and reclaimed control, 57-51, just before the start of the fourth quarter, as Teddy Bugay's 8 points complemented the combined 12 markers of Pineda and Lilio Tiples.
However, Martin Moreno saved gas in the tank for a big finish for Graphics Printing. The forever young speedster took over at crunch time and motored up and down the court for a14-point tear, as an exhausted LBT squad gasped for air. Moreno's burst helped steal the win, and earned him top scoring honors for his team in the process, as he finished with 20 markers. Pineda topped the field with 23.
In the lone 50A game, Joe Pangelinan's team made it through the opening frame in rhythm and a long range strike just before the end of the first quarter from Pangelinan himself put the group ahead, 24-16.
Fong's Bakery tried to claw its way back into the game and managed to work some players to the free throw line where they converted seven, but George Villasan and Ed Manalili hooked up for 11 markers for Pangelinan's team to stretch the lead at the half, 41-31.
Then things went from bad to worse for Fong's, as it afforded Pangelinan's team over a 20-point margin, 65-44, heading into the final period. Dave Demapan fronted Pangelinan team's uprising with his 8 points, and although Fong's fought its tail off in effort to mount a late comeback, it simply ran out of time. Fong's did manage to save face, however and halved the deficit, but Pangelinan's crew never had a doubt.
Pangelinan's Manny Sitchon led all scorers with his 25 points and received 21 points in support from Villasan.
Meanwhile, the season continues this Sunday with 40A's 8 Division squaring off against Nat Banatasa's group at 9am, and Erika's Catering taking on Ask12B1 at 11am. Then 45A's Bloody Mama faces LBT at 12:30pm, while 50A's LBT closes the action against John Manglona's crew at 1:30pm.
