Proa subdues Rollers 2

Proa center Shane Deleon Guerrero-Diaz wields a shot around Rollers 2's Jeron Ano during their U20 game in the Rotary caging last Tuesday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. (Walter J. Sutherland) Mariana Resort/ NMC Proa dealt the Rollers 2 its second consecutive loss with a convincing 73-52 victory in their U20 game in the Rotary Club of Saipan's 21st Youth Basketball League last Tuesday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Proa improved to a 7-1 record and seized the second place from the Rollers 2, which rode a nice wave of seven wins, including a clutch victory over its big brother Rollers 1 (3-3), but stumbled as of late against the league's Top 2 contenders. Proa has fallen short only to the undefeated defending champions Sonics (8-0) thus far.

The Rollers 1 faced Kagman (2-5) yesterday and details will be released tomorrow, while the season continues today at 5:30pm when the Agape Torchbearers (0-8) look to notch their first win against LD Prime (2-5). The remaining standings include the Oleai Ol'Aces (3-2), Hi-5 (3-5), and the Chalan Kanoa Saints (2-6).

The Rollers 2 hung around in the first period, thanks to a late 7-point string of Kwon Dixon. However, Proa still managed a two possession advantage, 20-16, as it pounded the ball inside to Shane Deleon Guerrero-Diaz and Frank Mettao.

Proa's circus act Ichitaro Faisao came to town and dropped 11 points in the second quarter to help provide some breathing room at the half, 38-31.

The Rollers 2 was already running on fumes by that point and likely would have dissipated if not for a trio of three-pointers. However the long ball did not fall for the skittish group after the break and Proa pulled away in the third quarter, 62-42, with Deleon Guerrero-Diaz on a 10-point surge.

Proa then sent in the reserves for the majority of the final period after Faisao and Mettao tallied a couple more baskets for good measure.

Faisao's game-high of 22 points edged teammates Deleon Guerrero-Diaz (18) and Mettao (17), while the Rollers 2's Prince Factor was held to a meager 10, while Kwon and YJ Nakayama added only 9 apiece.

Notably, the Rollers 2 mainstays Irvyn Malonzo and CJ Morales were kept in check this time around and combined for only 12 markers.

Proa 73 - Faisao 22, Deleon Guerrero-Diaz 18, Mettao 17, Jas. Palacios 6, Hemley 5, Taitano 2, Sanarez 2, Jac Palacios 1.

Rollers 2 52 - Factor 10, Kwon 9, Nakayama 9, Malonzo 6, Morales 6, Ano 4, Espinosa 3, Iglesias 3, Floresca 2.

Scoring by quarters: 20-16, 38-31, 62-42, 73-52.
