A teenager died early morning yesterday after he was assaulted Tuesday night by two unidentified men and left lying on the highway in central Garapan where two vehicles subsequently ran over him.
Police said a doctor at the Commonwealth Health Center pronounced the victim, a 19-year-old Chuukese male, dead at 3:15am.
The victim suffered lacerations on the right side of his head, left lower lip, and bruises on the face.
Police officer Jason Tarkong said an autopsy will be conducted.
Tarkong said traffic and criminal investigators classified the case as a riot/auto-pedestrian/hit and run (fatality).
Traffic officers responded on Tuesday at 11:53pm to Chalan Pale Arnold or Middle Road near Mobil Mart after receiving a report of an auto-pedestrian incident.
Police investigation showed that two men chased the victim and caught him on the outer northbound lane of the highway in front of LJ Market.
After assaulting the victim, the two suspects, also described as Chuukese, left him lying on the outer northbound lane as they fled on foot toward Upper Miha.
Later, a car, described as a gray Toyota Sienna van 2011 or 2012 model, which was traveling north on the outer lane, struck the victim, dragging him about 50 feet. The van did not stop. Witnesses failed to get the license plate of the van, but observed damage to its front bumper.
After the van sped away, a 1998 Toyota Hilux 4X4 pickup truck later ran over the victim. The driver of the truck stopped and offered assistance to the victim.
An ambulance transported the victim to CHC's emergency room.
Police placed the case under further investigation.
Tarkong said complete descriptions of the two men who assaulted the victim were not available as of yesterday.
“More information will be provided as the investigation continues,” he said.
