Caysa is NMI's New Year baby

The New Year's Day birth of their daughter gave newlyweds Spencer and Lovely Marchadesch many reasons to be excited.

The 8-lb, 1-ounce baby girl, whom they named Caysa Marchadesch, made a quick arrival at 6:28pm Tuesday, marking the Commonwealth's first birth of 2013. She measured 21 inches in length.

Lovely Marchadesch, 26, of Tanapag village, woke with contractions at 2am Tuesday right after the family's New Year's Eve celebration. It was past 5am when they determined it was time. Her 29-year-old husband, Spencer, drove Lovely to the Commonwealth Health Center shortly around 6am.

After about a 12-hour labor, the first-time mother said she has nothing to say but a big thank you for bringing this wonderful gift to their family. Baby Caysa, she said, was born strong and healthy.

Lovely and Spencer have been couple for more than two years. They were married last Nov. 8.

As a licensed practical nurse, Lovely hopes that her daughter will also have that capacity to serve people. “I hope she will follow my footsteps and embrace the career I am proud of,” she said, quickly adding, though, that she and the family will always support whatever Caysa will pursue later on.

Although excited to enter the world of motherhood, Lovely admits that she's a bit scared because she had no experience in taking care of a baby. “I am so happy.but at the same time I'm a bit scared,” she said.

Lovely said it is her dream to have three children and plans to conceive a second child after three years. For now, Lovely plans to focus on her new role as housewife and mother. Her husband is a public school teacher.

“I feel so much love. Now, I have more reasons to be inspired and be happy with my life. I have a beautiful family that I will always protect and care about,” Spencer said.

The new parents said the idea of a New Year's birth did not cross their minds and neither believed it would happen despite the many predictions of family and friends. Lovely's due date was the first week of January.

For them, the significance of Caysa's birth is much larger than the uniqueness of her birthday.

Besides the couples' family and friends, Caysa was also visited yesterday by the officials and representatives of Marpac, which recognized the newborn as the CNMI's 2013 New Year Baby. The couple was awarded boxes of baby supplies for Baby Caysa.

Lovely was attended at the hospital by Dr. Liane Mizgala and midwife Roca Sablan.
