The Kagman High School Ayuyus held off a huge fourth quarter rally by the Mount Carmel School Knights to win the opener of the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization boys basketball season, 83-80, last Wednesday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
MCS spread the ball around in the opening period and received output from a handful of contributors for an early 16-15 edge, but the Knights were held to just two baskets in the second quarter as KHS exploded to a 36-21 halftime margin.
Anthony Malwelbug's 16 points led KHS' charge in the first half.
KHS pressed on to a 60-42 favor after three quarters as Jesse Santos tallied 10 points that was complemented by three more buckets by Malwelbug.
The Knights, however, refused to lay down and mounted an extraordinary comeback with its backs against the wall.
MCS contained the Ayuyus to only a dozen points in the last period of regulation and managed to force overtime with crafty execution of its half court set.
The team worked its way to the line and sank nine free throws that helped them get the momentum running its way in the late minutes.
MCS actually took the lead, 70-69, with just over a minute to go and had some opportunities to end it before the buzzer, but the Ayuyus hung tough and forced the match into a bonus frame.
The fire went out for the Knights in overtime as KHS' Santos chimed in a quick 5 points to give his crew some breathing room and they held it down on defense to preserve the win.
Malwelbug finished with a game-high 24 points, while MCS' Camacho led three others in double figures with 14.
