Twin victories for MHS Dolphins

Marianas High School's Erick Dela Rosa slashes through the post against Eucon International School defenders during their varsity game in the MISO caging last Friday at MHS Gymnasium. (Walter Cepeda Sutherland) Marianas High School earned a pair of convincing wins in the 2012-2013 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Boys Basketball League last Friday at the MHS MHS Gymnasium.

The Dolphins' varsity team overwhelmed Eucon International School, 74-58, while their junior crew routed Agape Christian School, 67-27.

Erick Dela Rosa and Franklin Macahito provided stability for MHS from the tip in the varsity game, as they combined for 14 points and lifted the Dolphins to an 18-10 lead in the opening period.

Allen Yu led Eucon, scoring 13 points in the first half, and though he received some support in the second quarter, MHS' bench helped build a stout 38-23 margin at midpoint. Dela Rosa tacked on 7 more markers for 15 points in first-half surge, while John Darag chipped in 6.

Eucon briefly postured a comeback in the third quarter, but MHS reestablished control in the closing minutes, 57-39, with Dela Rosa turning in an honorable effort on both ends of the floor. He added 3 more points in the fourth quarter for a team-high 26 before taking a seat, while Yu scrambled for 34 points on the short end.

In the junior varsity match, Ethan Manalili and Daniel Ogumoro paced MHS with 6 points apiece to help create a promising 30-11 favor in the first frame.

Agape was then held to one basket in the second quarter, as MHS pressed on at the break, 39-13.

Sherwin Gaspar came off the bench for MHS in the third quarter and strung up 7 points to put the game out of Agape's reach, heading into the final period.

Ogumoro's 13 points led three MHS teammates in double figures, while Agape's Zeyue Lin turned in a team-high 11.

Meanwhile, the MISO caging continues today with Agape getting a chance for redemption against the debuting Saipan Southern High School at 4pm. In the 5:45pm varsity game, the Rays will take on Eucon.
