IT&E's launching of GSM network services on Rota is a welcome development on the island, according to Mayor Melchor A. Mendiola.
In a recent phone interview, Mendiola touted the news as a “good thing” as it increases the communication capabilities of the southernmost island of the CNMI.
“This will definitely open opportunities for better global communication from Rota,” he told Saipan Tribune.
The telecommunications company announced a new era of coverage and connectivity in the Marianas with last month's installation of three GSM base stations to pre-existing CDMA sites in Sinapalo, Songsong, and Northern Marianas College.
The two-week project, which was completed on schedule by IT&E personnel and their counterparts with Pacific Micro Tower, is part of the company's continuing effort to bring improved products and services to the Marianas.
With the availability of GSM network on Rota, Mendiola said island residents can now enjoy the benefits of wireless technology using an IT&E sim card.
