Sunset Beach Volleyball completes opening round

(Walter Cepdsa Sutherland) Vacos, Harapwang Face, Managaha Boys, and Dig This, Beaches advanced through the first round of the Northern Marianas Islands Volleyball Association/Godfather's House Bar Sunset Beach Volleyball tournament last Friday at Fiesta Resort & Spa.

Vacos defeated Managaha, 21-19; Harapwang Face routed Something Fishy, 21-12; Managaha Boys bested Fiesta Resort & Spa, 21-17; and Dig This, Beaches conquered Manam'ko, 21-16. A total of eight teams represent the field.

The competition picks up this Friday at Fiesta starting at 5pm with the upper bracket's Vacos taking on Harapwang Face and Managaha Boys challenging Dig This, Beaches, while the lower bracket pairings feature Managaha versus Something Fishy and Fiesta against Manam'ko.

The opening round consisted of single matches with game point set at 21 with a cap of 25, however the format will be modified this Friday to a best-of-three set series with game point set at 15 and a cap of 21 for the first two matches followed by a deciding set to seven with the cap removed, if necessary.

Modest cash prizes, in kind gifts and bragging rights go to the overall winners.

Fiesta, Brabu, KZMI 103.9 FM, and Gold's Gym also sponsor the event. Proceeds from the event benefit NMIVA's youth volleyball development programs and international travel.

In related news, the NMIVA's 2013 Co-Ed Grass Volleyball Tournament tips off this Sunday at the Navy Hill Athletic Field, located near Whispering Palm School.

The grass court event is open to player ages 18 and above, however younger players are allowed to play provided a parent or guardian signs a waiver form upon registration.

This is a two-person, guy and gal, event and players are requested to bring their own partner.

The competition is limited to 25 teams with the top 16 advancing to a double-elimination bracket following some opening pool play rounds that will also be used to rank the seeding.

Pool play games will be played to 11 with a cap of 15 with game point for the semifinal and finals matches set at 15 with a cap of 21.

Special ground rules include the nets being set at ladies height therefore male players cannot jump serve, block, or hit the ball from in front of the a designated 10-foot line. However, leaving the ground behind the line and landing inside of it is okay; serve must also rotate.

The entrance fee is set at $25, and $20 for NMIVA members; registration opens courtside at 8:30am leading up the 9am startup; forms can also be obtained online at www.nmivoleyball.org

All participants will receive an event T-shirt, at least four games of pool play, complimentary refreshments, and great comrade.
