Bird Island January Classic MTB Race this Sunday

A participant in last year's Tagaman Triathlon heads to the Bird Island Lookout, which will be the start/finish line of this weekend's MTB race. (Saipan Tribune) Northern Mariana Islands Cycling Federation will kick off the 2013 season this Sunday with the staging of the Bird Island January Classic XC MTB Race.

The first race of the season will have three courses: long, medium, and easy (for kids). The longest course for the weekend race will have bikers leaving Bird Island Lookout for Calavera road, around the back side to Radar via the one million gallon tank. Bikers will then pedal along the back road of the Marianas Country Club golf course before heading to Kimikaze and Autobahn and back to the Bird Island Lookout.

For the medium course, bikers will go straight to Autobahn from the Bird Island Lookout and then head to Santa Clause Lane and Banzai Trail before returning to the starting line (via a uphill climb at the elbow road). For the easy course, riders will also go to Santa Clause Lane from the Bird Island Lookout and head to the landfill before returning to the starting line.

Registration will begin at 6am, while the race will start at 7am. Entry fees for adult bikers are $10 and $5 for U12 riders. (Saipan Tribune)
