Police have identified the driver of a van that sped off after hitting and running over a teenager who later died. The teenager earlier was assaulted by two men who left him lying on a highway in Garapan.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Jason Tarkong said today, Wednesday, that police are now hunting down the driver identified as Woo Hyun Kim, a 31-year-old male, on charges of failure to exercise due care, accidents, failure to file an accident report, and homicide by vehicle.
Tarkong also revealed that on Saturday, Jan. 12, hikers discovered Kim's van--a silver/aluminum 2012 Toyota Sienna with license plate AED-281--abandoned in a secluded area near Obyan Beach.
Tarkong said Superior Court associate judge David Wiseman issued a warrant for the arrest of Kim and imposed a $100,000 cash bail.
The Toyota Sienna van was traveling north on the outer lane when it struck 19-year-old Jefferson Kiauol Keju, dragging him about 50 feet. The van did not stop.
After the van sped away, a Toyota Hilux 4x4 pickup truck later ran over the victim. The driver, 22-year-old Aniceto Ogumoro Jr., stopped and offered assistance to the victim.
Police said that, on the night of Jan. 1, 2013 two men chased Keju and caught him on the outer-bound lane of Middle Road in front of LJ Market.
An ambulance transported the victim to the Commonwealth Health Center, where he was pronounced dead the following day, Jan. 2.
Police later arrested Herman Fitial, 34, and Felix Kileleman Jr., 19, after investigation showed they were the ones who chased and assaulted the victim.
