Rotary decides theme for 2013 Parade of Books

The Rotary Club of Saipan has set “Legends and Myths of the Marianas and Micronesia” as the 2013 theme for the Parade of Books event in April.

Rotarian and event coordinator Reina Camacho said on Tuesday that having a theme for the annual event is meant to challenge participating schools in their performances.

Parade of Books is a competition open to all elementary schools in the CNMI and aimed at encouraging literacy and creativity in a fun and innovative way by allowing them to create a performance reflecting the book they read to win cash prizes.

Up for grabs is $1,000 for first place, $750 for second place, $500 for third place, $300 for fourth place, $200 for fifth place, and $100 as consolation prizes.

“All participating students must have read the book, or in this case, the legend or myth before auditioning for the school's performance,” said Camacho.

She revealed that three schools-Garapan and Koblerville elementary schools and Mount Carmel School-have confirmed participation and have been attending meetings in preparation for the upcoming event to be held on Saturday, April 13.

Camacho said that of the three registered participants, Garapan Elementary School is the only one who has submitted the title of the book they will interpret, which is “Legend of the Flame Tree.”

“Although the deadline to register is March 1st, I'm encouraging all CNMI elementary school teams, private and public schools, to register immediately to begin preparations,” she added.

Camacho invited interested participants to attend their next meeting at 4pm on Monday, Jan. 28 at McDonald's on Middle Road.
