Former House speaker Eli Cabrera has been appointed director of the Division of Parks and Recreation under the Department of Lands and Natural Resources. Other former lawmakers aligned with the governor and lost their re-election bid may also get government jobs, multiple sources said.
DLNR Secretary Arnold Palacios, also a former speaker, appointed Cabrera on Jan. 15, a day after the 18th Legislature was sworn into office. Cabrera, a speaker at the 17th Legislature, started working on Jan. 16.
Press secretary Angel Demapan said Palacios introduced Cabrera to the Special Tourism Working Group as director of DLNR's Division of Parks and Recreation last week.
After the Nov. 6 mid-term elections, Cabrera told the media that he's considering running for Saipan mayor in 2014. He also said he would like to work closely with individual communities to promote and preserve safety and cleanliness.
Cabrera was among those aligned with Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and his Republican Party that lost their seats to pro-impeachment candidates during the Nov. 6 mid-term polls.
