Send-off ceremony set for deploying CNMI soldiers

A send-off ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 1, Friday, at 10am soldiers from the CNMI who are deploying with the 1-294th Infantry Regiment and F Company, 29th Brigade Support Battalion, of the Guam Army National Guard. The ceremony will be held at the Fiesta Resort Hibiscus Hall in Garapan.

There are 17 men and women from the CNMI who will be deploying as part of the 600 soldiers belonging to the battalion.

The battalion is slated to depart Guam for Camp Shelby, MS, their mobilization training site in early March. They will continue to train there for about two months before proceeding to Afghanistan to conduct their mission in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The battalion soldiers are also scheduled to go on active duty training status beginning in early February, where they will wrap up pre-mobilization training in Guam.

The unit received a “Notification of Sourcing” on April 2011 and was told to prepare for a possible deployment to Afghanistan in 2013. Last April, the battalion received an official “Alert Order,” which allowed the unit to ramp up training for possible deployment.

The activation of the 1-294th Infantry Regiment can be considered as the largest group of reserve component troops to be mobilized and deployed from Guam. (PR)
