'College Information Night' tonight

The Thespians of the Western Pacific Islands is inviting all students to its second “College Information Night” today, Feb. 5, from 7pm to 9pm, at the Dolphin Theatre on the Marianas High School Campus. A “Q&A” follows.

All aspects of the college admission process will be presented with some focus on opportunities for Thespian and NFL students. There are specific colleges and universities that seek out NFL and Thespian students, there are special scholarships available and unique audition opportunities.

All grade levels and all students are invited to attend, not just juniors and seniors. (PR)

USS Higgins makes port visit to Palau

The guided-missile destroyer USS Higgins arrived in Palau Feb. 4 for a port visit.

During the ship's visit, Higgins sailors will conduct several community relations projects including repairing two high schools damaged by Super Typhoon Bopha. The storm struck Palau Dec. 2.

Higgins is homeported in San Diego. It is the 26th ship in the Arleigh Burke class of guided missile destroyers and the first ship in the Navy named after Marine Corps Col. William R. Higgins. The ship was commissioned in 1999 and has nearly 300 sailors assigned to it.

Higgins helps provide deterrence, promote peace and security, preserve freedom of the sea and humanitarian/disaster response within 3rd Fleet's 50-million square mile area of responsibility in the Eastern Pacific, as well as supporting the Navy's Maritime Strategy when forward deployed. (PR)

Valentine's Walk on Feb. 9

The Marianas Health Annual Valentine's Walk will be held on Feb. 9, 2013. Free registration begins at 6am. The walk will start from the Carolinian Utt (next to Hafadai Beach Hotel) down the Beach Road Pathway. Turnaround for the 5K course is at the Japanese Tank, while the turnaround for the 10K course is at the Oleai Beach. Special T-shirt is available while the supplies last.
