Top qualifier Tars Olopai held off a final round charge by Joe Saures to claim the Refaluwasch Golf Association's 2013 season opening January Ace of the Month title last Jan. 26 at Coral Ocean Point Golf Resort.
Olopai's low net score of 64 from the qualifier proved true against Saures' net final round low net of 67.
The latter posted a 38 on the front nine and finished the back with a 43 for a gross tally of 81 that was trimmed down to a 67. However, Olopai's one-over par 73 raw card (39/34) from the Jan. 12 qualifier issued him a 64 net score that secured a berth into the season-ending Ace of Aces finale tournament in December 2013.
Though he finished second in the end, Saures ruled the final round over “Ron” Yong Su Choi, new member John Salas, and 10 others.
Choi recorded a 41 on the front with a 40 on the back side for a gross total of 81 that factored into an even 70 net score, while Salas (49/45, 94 gross) matched his net result, but settled for third place due to the club's handicap tiebreaker rule.
Choi also came away as the closest to the pin winner in hole No. 7, while L.J. Camacho earned the nod in hole No. 14.
Other participants of the January ace tourney, with their net scores in parenthesis, were as follows: John Rebuen (71); Tom Tebuteb (71); 2012 season champion Harry Nakamura (71); Ki Soo Kim (74); Manny Mangarero (75); Ray Tigilau (76); Diwain Stephen (76), L.J. Camacho; (77) and Sam Kim (80).
RGA would like to extend its appreciation to Ed Tenorio, Jess Wabol, Tom Tebuteb, Joe Saures, Tars Olopai, Manny Mangarero, Ki Soo Kim, Diwain Stephens, and Jordon Kosam for hosting the event.
The group also wants to offer a warm welcome to new members Sam Kim, John Rebuenog, and John Salas.
The group's February ace of the month tournament is scheduled for Feb. 10 at the Laolao Bay Golf Resort's west course. Check-in time is set for 11am followed by a noon tee off.
