MWA's annual Valentine's Walk is a go

The Marianas Walking Association will be able to host its annual Valentine's Walk after getting a sponsor for this year's event.

MWA's Hiroko Tajima said yesterday that Marianas Health Services has stepped up to support the event, slated for Saturday, Feb. 9, starting from the Carolinian Utt in Garapan.

Tajima said participants will walk along the Beach Road Pathway and have the option to choose the 5K walk up to the Old Japanese Tank or the 10K walk, which will reach the Oleai Beach pavilion and back.

Registration is free to the public and begins at 6am. Participants will receive special T-shirts while supplies last.

Tajima said MWA is very excited to work with Marianas Health Services for the first time.

She noted that as a nonprofit organization, MWA needs the support of the community to carry out their activities every year.

Besides the Valentine's Walk, MWA also hosts annually the SOPHIA Walk in May, Foundation Walk in August, Aqua Walk around September, Turkey Walk in November, and the Christmas Walk in December.

Tajima said they were actually planning to cut back on their regular events if they fail to get a sponsor to collaborate with them, given the “very difficult” economic situation in the islands.

“We're really very glad that Marianas Health Services is helping us this year,” she said.

Tajima said Marianas Health Services will be providing free screening for blood pressure and blood sugar before and after the walk.

She said that Marianas Health Services and Homeland Security will be providing special prizes.

Tajima urged the public to strive to be healthy this year by joining the free walking event. For more information, call Tajima at 287-8780, Bea Quitugua at 285-1694 or Hiroko Tenorio at 483-0614.
