Marianas High School's varsity and junior Dolphins each bagged wins in the continuation of the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization 2013 boys basketball season last Monday at the MHS Gymnasium.
The varsity Dolphins rolled over the Eucon International School Blazers, 88-50, while the Jr. Dolphins defeated the Agape Christian School Torchbearers, 46-31.
MHS' varsity team capped its fourth win in five games, while the junior crew extended its flawless streak to five in a row.
The Blazers have managed just one win in five tries, while Agape fell to a 2-3 win-loss slate.
The undefeated Saipan Southern High School Manta Rays (4-0) hold the top spot in the varsity standings in front of MHS, Kagman High School Ayuyus (2-2), Eucon, and the Mount Carmel School Knights (0-4).
The Jr. Dolphins lead KHS (2-2), SSHS (2-2), Agape, and Saipan International School's Jr. Geckos (0-4) in junior division play, while the freshmen class standings list MHS (2-0) in front of SSHS (1-1) and KHS (1-2).
The season continues today at the MHS Gym at 4pm with KHS taking on SIS in a junior pairing followed by the 5:30pm varsity match between the Ayuyus and the Knights.
In Monday's varsity game, MHS' John Darag tallied 11 points in the first quarter, including two long-range strikes, to help give the Dolphins a commanding 24-9 lead in the first period.
The team went on to double up Eucon, 42-21, at the half as the latter's mainstay Allen Yu was held to just a pair of free throws in the second quarter.
Darag hit once again from behind the arc late in the period that was complemented by 4 points apiece by Lixing Dai and Michael Mancao.
Both teams then merely traded baskets in the third quarter as the count shifted to 57-35, heading into the last frame and the Dolphins went on to coast to an easy win.
Yu was held to just 8 points in the second half, but still finished with a team high 15, while MHS managed to get every player on its roster to contribute come the final buzzer. Darag led the 12-man band with 18 points.
In the junior varsity game, MHS busted out four treys and shot out to a stout 18-8 lead in the opening period.
Two of the three-balls came from Ethan Manalili who led the charge with 10 points.
He took a seat in the second quarter, but Shane Deleon Guerrero-Diaz romped inside for 9 points to give the Jr. Dolphins an even bigger margin, 31-13, at mid-point.
Agape's Tao Yang managed 9 points on the other end for the Torchbearers through intermission, but was shut out in the second half.
MHS was held to just a point in the entire third period, but continued to play strong defense and preserved its big lead and the team ran away in the final canto.
Deleon Guerrero-Diaz led the closing charge with 6 points and finished with a game-high 15, while Agape's Mark Noel Puno scrambled for a dozen in defeat.
