Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has been impeached by the House on additional felony charges Monday afternoon.
The governor can be impeached and convicted on any of the 18 allegations of corruption, felony and neglect of duty.
With the House adopting the articles of impeachment, the process moves to the Senate for trial.
The first three articles adopted by the 20-member House as of 2:15pm are in connection with the unauthorized release of a federal inmate to give the governor a massage at his private residence in the wee hours of the morning in January 2010.
Articles 1, 2, and 3 were adopted by a vote of 16-4.
This is the first time in CNMI history that a governor has been impeached.
