A 32-year-old man who was arrested last year with another man for having sex with a 14-year-old girl who later became pregnant was slapped with a three-year prison term.
In an order issued Friday, Superior Court Associate Judge David A. Wiseman sentenced Leon Joaquin Sanchez to 10 years in prison, all suspended except for three years, with credit for time served.
Sanchez will start serving his sentence on Feb. 27, 2013.
He pleaded guilty to sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree as part of the plea deal.
Wiseman said the victim had relations with several other men and a plea deal would avoid subjecting her and her family to the stress and trauma of a trial.
The judge said Sanchez had stated that he loves the girl, intends to marry her, and support her and the child.
After serving his sentence, Sanchez will be placed on probation for five years. He was required to register as a sex offender, perform 100 hours of community service, and pay a $200 fine, $100 court assessment fee, and $500 probation fee.
Upon the birth of the victim's child, Sanchez will be required to submit to a paternity test. If determined to be the father, he is responsible for restitution to the victim for the medical costs associated with labor and delivery.
In August 2012, Tinian police arrested Sanchez and Donald Cruz Arriola, 24, on allegations that they had sex with a 14-year-old girl who was then pregnant.
A detective stated in her report that the girl told a Division of Youth Services officer that she had sex with two men in the latter part of August 2012 and that one of them was Arriola.
The detective also disclosed that the girl confessed that Sanchez made her pregnant and that they have been having sex since late July 2012.
