A team of University of Guam accounting students has won the 2013 Association of Government Accountants' Annual Government Finance Case Challenge in Washington, D.C. for the second straight year. The team prepared a Citizen-Centric Report for Loudoun County Public Schools, Virginia, which included a paper summarizing the criteria and justification the team used to decide what information to include and exclude in the report. The other finalist was a team from North Carolina State University.
UOG assistant professor of accounting Dr. Doreen Crisostomo organized the student team, which is composed of Cindelle Maye O. Sazon, Angeline Corpus Nieto, Steven Patrick Delgado, and Russell Jon Miranda Bala-an. The students were all in Crisostomo's fall 2012 Government Accounting class.
"We're happy that all our hard work paid off and that we were able to defend the title,” said Bala-an. “It was very gratifying to represent the University of Guam at a national level."
The UOG team received scholarships to attend the AGA National Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 12-13, 2013, where they presented their finalized solutions before a panel of government leaders, corporate partners, and chief financial officers.
According to the AGA website, the Government Finance Case Challenge experience, “promises to challenge students’ moral reasoning, raise their awareness of the importance of government accountability and open doors to a future career in government.” (UOG)
