A 60-year-old Russian male tourist drowned while snorkeling outside the reef of Obyan Beach on Monday.
Police Sgt. Thomas Blas Jr. said today, Tuesday, that the victim identified as Gennadi Kosolapkin was located Monday at 9:40pm by Guam U.S. Coast Guard Rescue 5 helicopter about half a mile south of Obyan Beach.
Blas said the body was transported to the Commonwealth Health Center where a doctor pronounced the victim dead that same night.
The wife told police that as they were snorkeling in the waters of Obyan, Kosolapkin went outside the reef alone. When he did not return to the shore, the wife called 911 for assistance.
It was at 5:02pm Monday when patrol police officers and boating safety officers responded to the emergency call.
Search and rescue operations were then conducted.
More details to follow.
